Star 4: Purchase at least 20% Michigan grown or processed foods by 2020. In an effort to provide an ongoing evolving resource to hospitals to continue modeling healthy food environments, the following commitment is recommended. Sign the resolution of support for the Michigan Good Food Charter challenging institutions, and thus hospitals, to commit to purchase at least 20 percent Michigan grown and produced or processed foods. It is also recommended that your hospital sign onto the Health Care Without Harm Healthy Food Pledge if it has not done so already.

What is your facility’s 12-month baseline (percentage) of Michigan-grown or produced food purchases and how did you calculate this amount (ie requesting reports from your distributor or using a database you’ve created to track your purchases)? Has your facility put a policy or plan in place to continue to track purchases in order to reach the 20% goal by 2020? Or has your hospital already reached the 20% goal and do you plan to continue increasing the amount of Michigan products you purchase? What is your new goal if so?
Did your hospital choose to expand or host a hospital farm/farmer’s market to feature Michigan produce while accepting Electronic Benefit Transfer and/or Project Fresh Coupons? Please explain why or why not.
Did your hospital choose to expand or offer a Community Support Agriculture Share program for your hospital’s employees by becoming a drop-off site for Michigan farmers? Please explain why or why not.
Did your hospital choose to sign Health Care Without Harm’s Healthy Food in Health Care Pledge as a result of this campaign? (You can find a copy of the pledge here) Please explain why or why not.

In order to complete this verification process, please send TWO or more of the following to healthyfoodhospitals@mha.org:

  1. Attach a signed copy of your hospital’s support for the Michigan Good Food Charter (You can locate a copy here).
  2. Attach a report from your vendors showing your Michigan purchases (for at minimum a 6 month period).
  3. Attach your hospital’s tracking document for Michigan purchases (for at minimum a 6 month period).
  4. Attach at least one photo from your hospital’s farmer’s market/farm stand or CSA pickup.
